Low water pressure: the common causes in Accra homes

Whether you are on mains, a tank, or a pump, low pressure has a short list of causes. Here is how to narrow it down before calling anyone.

One outlet, or the whole house?

If only one tap or shower is weak, the problem is local — usually a blocked aerator, a scaled shower head, or a partly closed isolation valve under the fixture. Unscrew the aerator and rinse the grit out; that alone fixes a surprising number of “pressure problems”.

Whole house on mains supply

If everything is weak and you draw directly from the mains, check whether your neighbours have the same issue — supply pressure in parts of Accra genuinely fluctuates. If it is only your property, the main stop valve may be partly closed, or the supply pipe may be partially blocked or leaking.

Tank and pump systems

Weak flow on a tank system often means the tank outlet valve is partly closed, the outlet strainer is blocked, or the tank is simply low. If you have a booster pump, listen to it: rapid on-off cycling suggests a pressure switch or air-vessel fault; running without building pressure suggests a worn impeller or an air lock.

When it needs professional attention

Pressure that drops gradually over weeks points to a growing blockage or a leak. Pressure that vanished overnight points to a failed component. Either way, describe the pattern to us — the history is half the diagnosis.
