Why is my water bill suddenly high?
The usual suspects behind a jump in your Ghana Water bill — and a ten-minute meter test that tells you if you have a hidden leak.
The usual causes
In most homes it is one of four things: a toilet cistern that keeps running after the flush, a dripping tap left for months, a hidden leak in a buried or concealed pipe, or a float valve in the storage tank that no longer closes and lets the tank overflow.
The ten-minute meter test
Close every tap and appliance, then look at your water meter. If the dials are still creeping, water is escaping somewhere. Note the reading, wait several hours without using water (overnight works well), and read it again. Any movement means a leak on your side of the meter.
Check the toilet first
A running toilet is the most common culprit and the cheapest to fix. Listen for a faint hiss from the cistern, or look for a constant trickle down the back of the bowl. That trickle can waste hundreds of litres a day.
When to bring in a plumber
If the meter test shows movement but every visible fixture is dry, the leak is concealed — under a floor, in a wall, or between the meter and the house. Tracing that is professional work; getting it fixed usually pays for itself within a few billing cycles.
